Neurological Disabilities
Social Security Disability Attorney Randy Zeldin, Esq. represents individuals seeking Social Security Disability benefits, who suffer from a broad range of neurological disabilities. A neurological disability stems from a trauma, disorder or disease of the human nervous system. Following are some of the typical neurological disabilities considered by the Social Security Administration for SSD benefits:
Epilepsy - Individuals with this disorder suffer from seizures, which vary in frequency and severity. Sometimes a severe seizure will involve aura, tongue bites, lack of sphincter control and postictal phenomena.
Brain Tumors - A malignant brain tumor may result in paralysis, tremor or other involuntary movements, ataxia and sensory disturbances.
Multiples Sclerosis - This genetic disorder results in muscle weakness or other significant disorganization of motor function. Extreme fatigue and loss of visual acuity are also symptoms of this disease.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Commonly called "Lou Gehrig's Disease", this rare genetic disorder is nearly always fatal and totally destroys the motor cells in the spinal cord and brain stem.
Myasthenia Gravis typically is contracted by women. It is a fairly rare disorder of the immune system that blocks transmission of impulses from nerve endings to muscle fibers.
Traumatic Brain Injury - Unfortunately, this is becoming more common among Combat Veterans, who may sustain non-impact brain injury from the blast wave of improvised explosive devises.
Central Nervous System Vascular Accident - The common term is “stroke,” which are typically caused by a ruptured cerebral artery bleeding into the brain or blockage of a cerebral artery. Strokes can result in any number of deficits, including standing, walking, lifting or carrying.
Benign Brain Tumors - These can include a range of types of tumors, usually pituitary tumors and meningiomas. Mental status deterioration and visual field deficits are common disability associated with benign brain tumors.
Parkinsonian Syndrome - This is a tragic syndrome which is growing in the United States, with the aging of the population. It is a chronic neurological disorder, resulting from insufficient dopamine transmitter in the basal ganglia of the brain. Symptoms include resting tremor; muscle rigidity; bradykinesia and hypokinesia; autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
Cerebral Palsy - This disability is a syndrome which occurs in the first years of life and results in brain damage. The impact is typically severe impact on movement and posture. Other related deficits can be hearing, speech or visual deficits.
Myasthenia Gravis - A disease of the nervous system, which has the consequence of significant difficulty with speaking, swallowing or breathing or significant motor weakness of the extremities.
Spinal Cord or Nerve Root Lesions - Damage to the spinal cord can impede the ability of an individual to walk or move and numbness and paralysis are common. Spinal cord injury can be result of severe trauma or certain infectious diseases.
